The Alpine Marmot

Met you in the summer, in the hills of Ritten and Rodeneck
You were down by the river, I was up to my chest

You asked where I was going. Did I aim to burrow on through the earth?
I said “I’m headed for the chasm. Beyond the burdens of this dirt.”

Go on your way now
I will wait for you underneath

You said, “Be my lover? Live with me where the mountain ends?
Could you make it ’til spring time? Would you hollow again?”

I’ve seen the forest follow, I need the searing light to dim.
For a while it was over.
Found glory in the grim.

Go on your way now
I will wait for you underneath

The dust will not cry out
No, my bones won’t remember me

Down there I saw the fallen
I saw the roots all talkin’
I saw the earthworms  crawlin’, the long forgotten
I saw the voices callin’
I saw the great dark yawnin’, my mother cryin’
I saw my father tryin’
I saw my lover dyin’, and savior sighin’

I saw the flume was lyin’
I saw the flume
