When I’m Gone

down by the roadside, a creature so despised: a lonely coyote
he said, “if you’d oblige, my wounds, tho so divine, take me to my family…

“then bury me low
hang me high
as long as i go.”

when i’m gone
tell my sons to burn the earth
been so long
tell my daughters what they’re worth

i said, “scavenger, what plagues you, to seek the dirt? can you be o’ so bold?”
he cried, “don’t be absurd, i am just a mangy cur! would you save the young or old?

bury me low
hang me high
long as i go

when i’m gone
tell my sons to burn the earth
been so long
tell my daughters what they’re worth

seen the wisest fall down
just trying to find both their feet again
know we all just want to begin again
and cease this crawling

when i’m gone
tell my sons to burn the earth
been so long
tell my daughters what they’re worth

when i’m gone
tell my lover spurn the urge
carry on,
go forth where i failed and turned
